President Obama is expected to make an announcement Friday about granting a form of legal status for as many as 5 million people who are in the United States illegally. However, officials say that one key government benefit will not be extended to these individuals—government subsidies for health-care insurance from the Affordable Care Act. The move is seen as potentially avoiding conservative fury over providing government health care to illegal immigrants. In 2009, Republican Rep. Joe Wilson famously yelled “You lie!” at Obama during the State of the Union when he said Obamacare wouldn’t go to undocumented immigrants.
