President Obama announced Sally Yates as his nominee for deputy attorney general Monday, the second-in-command at the Justice Department. Yates, a 22-year veteran prosecutor and U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Georgia since 2010, would succeed Deputy Attorney General James M. Cole, who is resigning in January to pursue a job in the private sector. Yates is the first woman to serve as the U.S. attorney in Atlanta and has served as the vice chairwoman of Attorney General Eric H. Holder’s advisory committee.
