Abuse Case Against NFL Player Crumbles

The domestic-abuse case against the Carolina Panthers’ Greg Hardy has crumbled because his accuser refused to testify in court Monday. Hardy was convicted of assaulting and threatening to kill then-girlfriend Nicole Holder last year. The Pro Bowler decided to appeal the conviction, but Holder said she did not want to go through another trial. The Charlotte Observer reports that Holder is believed to have reached an undisclosed civil settlement with Hardy outside of court. “Due to the circumstances of this case, the victim’s testimony would have been critical evidence for the jury to consider,” said District Attorney Andrew Murray. “The victim appears to have made herself unavailable to the state.” Hardy only played one game during the last season but was still paid $13.1 million for the year.
