Alaska has beaten most of the lower 48 to getting high—legally. On Tuesday, the state law permitting residents to smoke marijuana in private went into effect. It makes Alaska the third state in the country to legalize recreational pot use. People in Alaska are also allowed to grow up to six marijuana plants and can carry as much as an ounce on them in public, though they can’t light up there. As with liquor, the law permits marijuana use only for people over the age of 21. Also, some counties have already started passing local ordinances to limit marijuana usage. On Monday night, Wasilla banned the making of pot brownies as well as other restrictions, but those measures may stand once the state releases it guidelines for marijuana growers, clubs, and companies some time within the next nine months.
