A video released online appears to show Islamic State militants destroying parts of the ancient Iraqi Assyrian city of Nimrud, including a site that dates back to the 13th century B.C., the AP confirmed Sunday. The seven-minute video purportedly shows militants using sledgehammers, jackhammers, and explosives to level ancient relics, in what UN Secretary-General has called a “a war crime.” ISIS militants have been attacking historic sites they say promote idolatry and defy their interpretation of Islamic law. Last month, both the Iraqi government and the United Nations warned the site near the militant-held city of Mosul had been looted and destroyed.
