A former FIFA executive admitted to a U.S. federal judge that he and others on the organization’s ruling panel took bribes to vote for South Africa as the site of the 2010 World Cup. Chuck Blazer pleaded guilty in 2013 to racketeering and other charges, saying, “Beginning in or around 2004 and continuing through 2011, I and others on the FIFA executive committee agreed to accept bribes in conjunction with the selection of South Africa as the host nation for the 2010 World Cup.” Blazer also admitted to accepting bribes in 1992, to vote for the country that would host the 1998 World Cup.
