Dylann Roof has made statements “tantamount to a confession” for killing nine people inside a Charleston church, police said. (A police spokesman denied earlier reports that police said he was “trying to start a race war.”) Sources also told NBC News that Roof told police he almost backed out of the murder plot “because everyone was so nice to him,” but ultimately decided to “go through with his mission.” They now say that Roof bought the handgun by himself in April in Charleston, while prior reports indicated it had been given to him for his birthday by his parents. Roof was charged Friday with nine counts of murder. If convicted, he faces the death penalty.
