On March 18, 1990, two men dressed as police officers entered Boston’s Gardner Museum and stole 13 renowned works of art, including paintings by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Manet. Now federal law-enforcement officials say they think they had help from inside. On Thursday, investigators released surveillance video showing a “night watchman open the museum’s side door and grant unauthorized access to an unidentified man at about 12:49 a.m. on March 17, 1990—24 hours before the museum was robbed under similar circumstances,” The Boston Globe writes. The watchman has been identified as Richard Abath, a rock musician who was moonlighting as a guard. Abath admits he let the two men in on March 18 but has long denied any ties to the robbery.
