David Bowie’s music, both old and new, shot up the charts after his death on Sunday night. Bowie’s newly released album Blackstar briefly hit No. 1 on iTunes, and Best of Bowiealso rocketed into the top 10 of albums on Monday. Fans around the world erected memorials almost instantly: Flowers and candles were placed near a mural in London and outside of Bowie’s old apartment in Berlin, where he recorded his album Heroes. Carnegie Hall announced a tribute concert is already in the works. A theater friend close to the “Lazarus” production told Dutch radio that it was liver cancer that the rock star was battling in private for the past 18 months. Bowie is survived by his wife, Iman, his son, Duncan Jones, and his daughter, Alexandria “Lexi” Zahra Jones.
