Adnan Syed, the man whose murder conviction and life sentence came to national attention via the popular podcast Serial, appeared in court Wednesday for a three-day hearing on whether he’ll be granted a retrial. Syed was convicted of killing his girlfriend 16 years ago, and his last request for retrial was denied in 2012, years before a skeptical take on his conviction became the subject of a podcast. Now 35 years old, Syed was spotted entering the courthouse in shackles and prison garb, with a large beard and a skullcap—a much different look from the image of a high-schooler most Serial fans have come to know.
