Britain’s Foreign Office released an advisory warning to members of the country’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community who may be traveling to the United States to be aware of new laws in North Carolina and Mississippi. “The U.S. is an extremely diverse society and attitudes toward LGBT people differ hugely across the country,” the advisory said. “LGBT travelers may be affected by legislation passed recently in the states of North Carolina and Mississippi. Before traveling please read our general travel advice for the LGBT community.” North Carolina passed a law last month limiting LGBT protections and requiring transgender people to use bathrooms based on the sex listed on their birth certificate. Earlier this month, Mississippi passed a bill allowing businesses to refuse services to gay couples based on religious beliefs.
