San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr resigned late Thursday, at the request of Mayor Ed Lee and just hours after another police-involved fatal shooting rocked minority relations in the city. The move comes after two controversial shootings by police in recent months and an ongoing scandal that has revealed racist text messages traded among cops. Toney Chaplin, a 26-year-veteran of the department, will take over in in the interim. âI have previously expressed confidence in Chief Suhr because I know he agrees with and understands the need for reform,â Lee said in a press conference. âHe has demonstrated his commitment to instilling these reforms into the whole department, from the command staff to the cadets. But following this morningâs officer-involved shooting and my meeting with Chief Suhr this afternoon, today I have arrived at a different conclusion to the question of how best to move forward.â The incident involved the shooting death of an unarmed 27-year-old black woman who was fleeing in a stolen car.
