Amid the chaos of a situation in which five police officers were shot and killed late Thursday evening during a Dallas Black Lives Matter protest, officials incorrectly identified to the media a man named Mark Hughes as a suspected shooter. CBS Dallas later found Hughes, who has hired a lawyer and said that he was laughing and joking with police officers before the ambush. Hughes, an activist for the open carrying of guns, claimed police took him into custody and interrogated him, falsely claiming to have surveillance footage of him firing a weapon. âIt was persecution on me,â he said, demanding the department publicly apologize and clear his name.
