Ahead of his big VP announcement later this week, Donald Trump dropped by The O’Reilly Factor on Fox News Tuesday night to criticize President Obama’s remarks at the memorial for the five police officers shot and killed Dallas. “We have a divider. We need a cheerleader,” Trump said when host Bill O’Reilly asked how he would ease racial tensions as president. Asked if he, as a white man, can truly “understand” the black American experience, Trump took a page out of possible running mate Newt Gingrich’s playbook when he replied, “I would like to say yes, but you really can’t unless you are African-American.” Finally, though Trump did admit that the police shootings of innocent black men in Baton Rouge and Minnesota last week were “terrible,” when presented with the idea that cops might treat black people differently than how they do whites in this country, the GOP nominee would only say, “It could be.”
