California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) on Friday signed a bill that mandates state prison time for those convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious victim. The legislation was in response to the Brock Turner case, in which the Stanford student was given a short jail sentence after being convicted of raping an unconscious woman. Turner ended up serving just three months behind bars, and his case received national attention when his victim’s letter excoriating his defenders was made public.
