The United Nations has appealed for $120 million in immediate aid for Haiti after Hurricane Matthew tore through the country and left a humanitarian crisis in its wake. On Monday, the UN said 1.4 million were in need of urgent assistance after the storm destroyed homes, contaminated water sources, and killed livestock. “A massive response is required,” UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told reporters. “Some towns and villages have been almost wiped off the map,” he said. Hurricane Matthew left more than 1,000 people dead in Haiti, damaging more than 300 schools, and destroying food reserves. More than 175,500 people are staying in temporary shelters.
