Donald Trump’s campaign issued a condemnation Monday of a prominent white-nationalist supporter’s Utah robocall suggesting independent rival Evan McMullin is gay. William Johnson, a lawyer and leader of the American Freedom Party, placed the automated phone advertisement openly identifying himself as a “farmer and a white nationalist,” calling McMullin a “closet homosexual” because he is single and has “two mommies”—a reference to the fact that McMullin’s mother is now in a lesbian relationship following a divorce from the candidate’s father. “Don’t vote for Evan McMullin. Vote for Donald Trump. He will respect all women and be a president we can all be proud of,” the robocall concludes. “We strongly condemn this rhetoric and these activities of which we have no knowledge,” Trump spokesman Hope Hicks said in a statement addressing Johnson’s robocall on her candidate’s behalf.
