Hillary Clinton publicly conceded to Donald Trump on Wednesday morning after losing the Electoral College to the GOP nominee, wishing him success as America’s 45th president. The public concession speech comes after the Democratic nominee made a private phone call to Trump to congratulate him on winning the presidential race; she had declined to address her supporters who had gathered at the Javits Center in New York in what was expected to be a victory party. She was introduced by her running mate, Tim Kaine, who lauded her for her “amazing” accomplishments in life.
“I hope that he will be a successful president for all Americans,” Clinton, who won the popular vote, said. “I feel pride and gratitude for this wonderful campaign that we built together.”
A hopeful and optimistic Clinton urged her supporters to accept the result of the election, and said all Americans owe Trump an “open mind” and a “chance to lead” as he prepares to take office. She concluded by declaring that America’s “best days are ahead of us.”
During his victory speech, Trump said Americans “owe a debt of gratitude” to Clinton for her years of public service.
