French President Francois Hollande said Thursday he will not seek re-election. Hollande, whose approval rating often lags in the single digits, was expected to face an uphill battle to win another term in office. On Sunday, France’s mainstream conservatives chose former Prime Minister Francois Fillon in the first-ever presidential primary, defeating former President Nicolas Sarkozy. Two rounds of elections will take place next April and May.
