Hundreds of career foreign service officers are likely to sign onto an official dissent memo opposing President Donald Trump’s executive order, which instituted a ban on refugees and other travel from seven Muslim-majority countries, according to Lawfare. The blog also obtained a draft of the memo, which signals a significant policy disagreement and must be responded to by senior-level State Department officials within 30 to 60 days. After green-card holders and other individuals who have valid visas were detained at U.S. airports and, in some cases, blocked from boarding flights to the U.S., Republican senators including John McCain and Lindsey Graham came out against the executive order, saying it could harm our national security and the fight against terrorism.
