To further support the war effort.

The United States is sending an additional 1,500 troops to Afghanistan in order to support the war effort there, known as Operation Freedom’s Sentinel, the Army announced on Thursday. The soldiers, from the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, will be deployed during the summer. “Since spearheading allied assaults in Sicily and Anzio in 1943, the Devil Brigade has accomplished its missions through disciplined initiative,” said the unit’s commander, Col. Tony Magsig. “The same endures today. The ‘Devils in Baggy Pants’ are well-trained, well-equipped, and ready to assist our Afghan partners as part of the Resolute Support mission.” Earlier Thursday, the Pentagon announced that two U.S. Special Forces soldiers were killed in a joint U.S.-Afghan operation to counter ISIS.
