Pope Francis on Saturday scolded the U.S. for using the word “mother” in reference to its military’s largest non-nuclear explosive. “I was ashamed when I heard the name,” Pope Francis told students, speaking about the U.S. military’s GBU-43 Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb used last month in Afghanistan. The bomb has frequently been referred to as the “mother of all bombs,” and some officials described it that way in briefings. “A mother gives life and this one gives death, and we call this device a mother. What is happening?” he said. Pope Francis will have a chance to air his grievances on the matter with U.S. President Donald Trump when the two meet on May 24.
