Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Monday vowed to defy President-elect Donald Trump’s anti-immigration policies, expressly stating that the city will not back down to threats of withdrawing federal funds from cities who do not cooperate with immigration laws. “To be clear what Chicago is, it will always be a sanctuary city,” the mayor said during a press conference. “To all those who are, after Tuesday’s election, very nervous, filled with anxiety: you are safe in Chicago; you are secure in Chicago; and you are supported in Chicago.” In so-called “sanctuary cities,” local law-enforcement officials are not required to notify U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials about possible immigration-law violations they come across.
