New Mexico Democratic Sen. Martin Heinrich on Tuesday accused Attorney General Jeff Sessions of “impeding” the Senate Intelligence Committee’s investigation into Russian election meddling. During Sessions’ testimony to the committee, Heinrich asked the attorney general whether President Donald Trump expressed frustration with him over his recusal from all matters related to the federal Russia probe. Sessions doubled down on his previous answer that while the president was not claiming executive privilege in preventing him to respond, he was not able to comment on his conversations with Trump. “It is the longstanding policy of the Department of Justice not to comment on conversations that the attorney general has had with the president of the United States for confidential reasons,” Sessions previously said. Heinrich said Sessions would be “impeding the investigation” by not answering questions about his conversations with the president. “You are obstructing that congressional investigation by not answering that question. Your silence... speaks volumes,” Heinrich said.
