Dozens Killed in Brazil Prison Riot

About 60 people were reported killed in a violent prison riot Sunday night in a war between rival drug gangs in Manaus, Brazil, officials said. Sergio Fontes, head of security for Amazonas state, said the death toll in the riot, which was said to be under control by 7 a.m. Monday morning, is expected to rise. Local newspapers reported that some of the dead had been decapitated and then had their bodies thrown over the wall of the prison. It is unclear how many inmates escaped during the chaos. Reuters reports that the violence broke out between the First Capital Command drug gang and a local criminal group called the North Family.
