President Trump’s promise to continue protecting undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children—known politically as DREAMers—was reportedly violated by federal agents. According to USA Today, the new administration deported Juan Manuel Montes—a 23-year-old DREAMer who was brought to the U.S. at age 9—on Feb. 17 after a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer approached him. Because he left his wallet in a friend’s car, Montes was unable to produce his identification or proof of DACA status; and within three hours he was reportedly back in Mexico. Montes was reportedly granted protection twice under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program instituted by President Obama—a program Trump pledged to keep intact.
