A U.S. Marine died Friday after the amphibious assault vehicle that he and several others were training in sank to the bottom of Southern California's Del Mar boat basin during a morning training exercise. Rescuers worked for hours to pump air into the vehicle where the Marine was trapped, but to no avail. Three other Marines rescued from the vehicle were hospitalized, while two walked away uninjured. The AAV was introduced in 1972, and can carry up to 23 troops.
