Fighting inmates set off a riot in a high-security prison in the north of Mexico on Sunday that left scores dead before authorities could restore order. A Mexican official said the riot broke out at 2 a.m., and family members of the prison inmates waited anxiously outside the compound fences for word. Violence occurs frequently in Mexican jails, with feuding gang members fighting guards and each other for control. A January clash at another penitentiary left 31 dead; another in July counted 17 fatalities in a riot that led Mexican officials to detain the prison director and four guards.
