According to CNN, Mueller is reportedly looking to determine who was involved in crafting the statement and whether information was intentionally excluded. Answers to such questions could highlight possible efforts to conceal information during an obstruction of justice investigation. The White House is reportedly trying to find funding for staff legal defense. Trump Jr. initially claimed that he “primarily discussed a program about the adoption of Russian children” when he met with a Russian lawyer with Kremlin ties. That claim was later debunked by Trump Jr.’s own emails.
