Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua has died at the age of 58, after being plagued with health issues. The president's spokesperson said that Yar'Adua died at the Aso Rock presidential villa, with his wife by his side, but did not give a cause of death. The president was the country’s first to publicly declare his personal assets, so that corruption could be detected if necessary. However, Yar’Adua couldn’t rid Nigeria of its corruption or violence. Yar'Adua had checked into a Saudi Arabian hospital in November of last year for treatment for an inflammation of a sac around the heart, and had failed to officially reassume power after returning to Nigeria in February. Vice President Goodluck Jonathan has ascended to power.
