Florida has asked that some 5.6 million of its residents evacuate before Hurricane Irma makes landfall, according to state emergency officials. That amounts to more than a quarter of the state’s population. Andrew Sussman, the state’s hurricane program manager, said that sizable number includes people in the southern half of the state as well as those living in substandard housing in inland Florida. Irma is expected to make landfall this weekend.
