Maybe cats are onto something: an article in New York magazine looks at human mothers who eat their own placentas after giving birth. “It tastes like jerky: dry, gamy, bland jerky,” says a husband whose wife brought back some “placenta jerky” that a friend served at a party. One entrepreneur, Jennifer Mayer, started a company called Brooklyn Placenta Services, which cooks placentas for recent mothers. They’re typically dehydrated and ground into a powder. Mayer then turns the powder into 150 or so capsules. Preparation begins with her "squeez[ing] out the excess blood."
