Virginia Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam won the state’s Democratic gubernatorial primary Tuesday, defeating former Rep. Tom Perriello. Northam had the backing of the party’s establishment, including Virginia’s two Democratic senators, Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, and Gov. Terry McAuliffe. Perriello was supported by the party’s more liberal wing—Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren both endorsed him. Ed Gillespie, a former Republican National Committee chairman, narrowly defeated Corey Stewart, the ultra-conservative former Virginia chairman for President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign.
