A number of officials cited in a report from The Washington Post contend that despite the denials from President Trump’s national security adviser Michael Flynn, that he did in fact discuss U.S. sanctions against Russia with the country’s ambassador before Trump took office. Flynn’s communication with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak was interpreted as a potential indication that he was promising a reprieve from sanctions imposed on Russia by the Obama administration. Flynn denied the allegations Wednesday but, through a spokesman Thursday, his tune seemed to change slightly. The spokesman told the Post that Flynn “indicated that while he had no recollection of discussing sanctions, he couldn’t be certain that the topic never came up.” The details contradict public statements by Vice President Mike Pence about Flynn’s conversations.
