Donald Trump Jr. agreed to a meeting with a Kremlin-connected lawyer with the understanding that the Russian government was trying to help his father’s campaign, The New York Times reports. Trump Jr. reportedly met with the lawyer after receiving an email from Rob Goldstone, a publicist who arranged the meeting. In the email, Goldstone reportedly promised compromising information on Hillary Clinton and informed him that the information was part of a Russian government effort to help Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. In a statement to the Guardian, a Trump spokesperson said the then-candidate Trump did not know of the meeting. “The president was not aware of and did not attend the meeting,” wrote Mark Corallo, a spokesperson for Trump’s personal attorney, Marc Kasowitz.
