Brazil men’s soccer team has never won Olympic gold. Whatever excuses they make— Pelé wasn’t eligible to participate in the Games during his “Golden Age,” or too much added pressure from substandard performances in the 2014 World Cup and this year’s Copa América—this year’s team has one of the best shots ever to sweep the competition.
Currently ranked ninth by FIFA, the Brazilian national team has won every other major international soccer competition and won the silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics and the bronze at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.
And this year’s team, led by Neymar, widely considered one of the world’s top players, is one of the favorites to win gold.

Brazil’s group this year includes Denmark, Iraq, and South Africa— ranked 44th, 99th, and 67th, respectively, overall. With this grouping, Brazil is almost certain to make it out of the initial group play and compete in the men’s quarterfinals on August 13th.
Furthermore, after Brazil’s subpar performance at the Copa in June, head coach Dunga was quickly fired and replaced by Rogerio Micale whose sole focus now is leading the team to victory.
The national team has all eyes on them this year as they compete in their home country— can they finally secure the gold?
