Senators Asked Comey to Probe Jeff Sessions for Possible Perjury

Two Democratic senators asked ex-FBI Director James Comey to investigate Attorney General Jeff Sessions for possibly perjury, according to letters obtained by CNN. Sens. Patrick Leahy and Al Franken, both members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, expressed concerns to Comey and, later, acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, that Sessions had lied about having met with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak. “We are concerned about Attorney General Sessions’ lack of candor to the committee and his failure thus far to accept responsibility for testimony that could be construed as perjury," Franken and Leahy wrote in their first letter in late April. The two senators both grilled Sessions during his confirmation hearing, and the eventual AG said at the time he’d never had contacts with Russian officials about the 2016 election. When The Washington Post later reported that Sessions met twice with Kislyak during the campaign, the attorney general recused himself from the ongoing Russia probe.
