Two tunnels, presumably used to smuggle drugs from Mexico to the United States, have been discovered on the border. These aren’t your average mining tunnels, U.S. agents noted. Both tunnels had lighting and ventilation systems and extended more than 656 feet. The first one, discovered by the Mexican army, began underneath a Tijuana warehouse’s bathroom sink. The second started in a storeroom in a Mexican ice plant—it was lined with plywood and about 55 feet below the border—and ended in a storage room in Arizona. While over 150 tunnels have been discovered between the two countries since 1990, most have been more crudely constructed. Little evidence of wear on the floors of these recently discovered tunnels suggest that they are new and haven’t been used much.
