The Obama administration aims to reduce HIV infections in girls and young women in 10 sub-Saharan countries in Africa by 25 percent by the end of next year with a new, $300 million program. “No greater action is needed right now than empowering adolescent girls and young women to defeat HIV/AIDS,” National Security Adviser Susan Rice said. The program also aims to cut HIV infections by 40 percent by the end of 2017. The U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR, was started by President George W. Bush and expanded by President Obama.
