White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders contradicted President Trump on Monday, telling reporters at an off-camera briefing that Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin did, in fact, discuss sanctions when they met face-to-face at the G-20 Summit in Germany last week. On Sunday, Trump tweeted that he did not talk about any sanctions with the Russian leader. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson previously said the issue was a point of conversation during the meeting. Congress is considering new sanctions against Russia in retaliation for its election meddling, among other violations, and the Trump administration has been lobbying lawmakers in an attempt to weaken certain provisions.
