She may be a Hollywood star, but Kirsten Dunst took the second female lead in her childhood friend Molly’s wedding this weekend. The 30-year-old actress was the maid of honor at the ceremony, which took place in Santa Barbara, Calif. As part of her duties, Dunst hosted the bachelorette party last month at the St. Regis Punta Mita Resort in Mexico, where guests did yoga on the beach and got massages. And despite one small yawn caught on camera, Dunst did not upstage the bride in her pink-and-cream gown topped off by a garland of flowers in her hair.

In January 2011 Britney Spears walked down the aisle—but not as the bride. Dressed in a floor-length turquoise gown, the pop star was the maid of honor for her assistant and friend Brett Miller. Spears and her boyfriend, Jason Tratwick, flew down to Miami for the festivities at the Beachside Newport Hotel, but according to People, the two stayed at the Frank Sinatra Suite at the nearby Fontainebleau resort hotel because the Newport’s "pool wasn't private" enough. "During Thursday night's rehearsal dinner, Britney ditched the reception and ordered room service for herself, Jason, and her bodyguard," a source told People. "They had spaghetti bolognese, turkey burgers, chicken-noodle soup, a fruit plate, and one turkey sandwich."

Smash star Katharine McPhee looked smashing last month at the wedding of her older sister, Adriana, in Los Angeles. The 28-year-old actress and singer wore little makeup and a light-pink gown, but her plunging neckline could have slightly upstaged the demure bride. Naturally, McPhee was excited about the celebration. “Today is the big day @AdrianaMcPhee !!!!” she tweeted. “Wedding bells are ringing!!!!!”

Over a 10-year span, Caroline Kennedy was maid of honor at the two highest profile weddings in her famous family. In 1986 she stood by her first cousin Maria Shriver when she wed Arnold Schwarzenegger in Hyannis, Mass. And a decade later she earned the distinction when her younger brother, John, married Carolyn Bessette on Cumberland Island, off the coast of Georgia. And like the bride, she wore a gown designed by Narciso Rodriguez—albeit one in navy-blue crepe silk.
In 1957 actress Debbie Reynolds and her husband, singer Eddie Fisher, served as maid of honor and best man at the nuptials of their good friends Elizabeth Taylor and Mike Todd. Thirteen months later, however, Todd was killed when his plane, Lucky Liz, crashed. But the real shock came the following year, when Fisher left Reynolds to marry Taylor. "She was the most beautiful woman you ever looked at. I mean, those eyes," Reynolds said of Taylor in 2009. "Debbie Reynolds couldn't stack up to that, you know? It was just unfortunate because I had two little children.” But the two women eventually made peace more than 40 years later and spoofed their rivalry in These Old Broads, written by Reynolds’ daughter, Carrie Fisher. In the movie, the pair joke about their shared ex-husband “Freddie.”

Hills star Whitney Port is clearly enjoying her role as maid of honor in her best friend Jo’s wedding this year. The reality star has been tweeting about the events leading up to the big day, and has been keeping a running diary of the festivities on her website. “I take my job as maid of monor very seriously so it was important to me that we all gave her the best weekend she’s ever had,” Port wrote last month. “We spent our days by the pool and our nights eating at great restaurants before hitting the town. Dressed in a Sarah Burton dress, Pippa (and of course her bum) captivated the audience who watched the wedding on television. The event even inspired a fake Twitter account—@pippasass—who still has a lot on her mind. “Wow,” the account tweeted in May. “It’s been over a year since my bum has been in twitter.”
