10-Foot Tsunami Destroys Homes on Indonesian Island

A tsunami hit Indonesia’s Sulawesi island on Friday, causing more destruction in the city of Palu shortly after the region was struck by a 7.5-magnitude earthquake. The New York Times reports the tsunami’s waves were estimated to be 10-feet high, and videos on social media showed the waves crashing over roofs. At least one other community called Donggala has been affected by the tsunami. A spokesman for the country’s disaster agency told the Associated Press houses were “swept away and families were reported missing,” but it was difficult to establish how bad the damage was because “communications were disrupted.” The earthquake reportedly struck 48 miles north of Palu. Earlier Friday, another 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit the island and reportedly killed several people.
