An unusual beaching of more than 130 dolphins in Japan has local residents scrambling in a massive rescue effort. The animals—largely melon-headed whales, who despite their name, are deep-water dolphins—washed up about 100km northeast of Tokyo. Several are badly injured, while others are pushed out again soon after they are released into the water. Despite efforts, some dolphins are beaching a second time as the tide pushes them back in. “We see one or two whales washing ashore a year, but this may be the first time to find over 100 of them on a beach,” a coast guard official told AFP.
