NYPD officers shot and killed an armed suspect in Brooklyn on Tuesday night, about an hour after a citywide curfew took effect. NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan said at a press conference that officers were alerted by a Shotspotter activation and arrived at the Kingsborough Houses in Crown Heights to find a man who’d been shot. They found a man nearby with a gun in his hand hiding behind a tree. Monahan said, after reviewing bodycam footage and witness videos, that officers gave the man orders to drop the weapon for over a minute. When he didn’t comply, he was shot. An illegal handgun was recovered at the scene, Monahan said.

A video uploaded to social media, verified by Monahan, showed onlookers yelling “drop the gun, drop the gun” before 15 to 20 shots rang out. The victim of the initial shooting was taken to hospital in stable condition and two officers suffered minor injuries. The incident was not related to protests across New York.
