The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced Tuesday the 19 musical nominees for induction as its Class of 2017. Slain rapper 2Pac leads the pack, along with grunge rockers Pearl Jam, pop star Janet Jackson, and protest folk singer-songwriter Joan Baez. Britain is well represented with Yes, Depeche Mode, Electric Light Orchestra, and The Zombies. D.C.-based hardcore punk band Bad Brains will also be considered, along with Chaka Khan, Steppenwolf, J. Geils Band, Jane’s Addiction, Journey, Joe Tex, Kraftwerk, MC5, and The Cars. To be eligible for nomination, the artists have to have released an album or single in 1991 or earlier. As such, several artists—including Chic, Yes, and J. Geils Band—have appeared on previous ballots. This will mark the fifth consecutive year in which fans will have the chance to cast ballots alongside more than 800 artists, historians, and music-industry insiders that make up the Hall’s voting body.
