At least 48 people, including 15 children, were killed in a landslide at a massive garbage dump in Ethiopia, an official said Monday. Reuters reports that the dump, on the outskirts of the capital Addis Ababa, is home to hundreds of people who scavenge for food and goods and is the city’s only landfill. The landslide began late Saturday, destroying 49 homes. Many people have been declared missing since the initial tragedy, and 28 others have been treated at local hospitals. “In a bid to prevent such things happening again, people who were living in this area have now been taken to youth centers in other parts of the city,” city spokesman Amare Mekonen said.
