Five people were injured at the North Carolina State Fair Thursday night in a mishap on a ride known as the Vortex, which spins and turns riders upside down. Witnesses told local news that people were thrown from the ride and that several were unconscious. The injured carnival-goers, aged 14 to 39, were apparently exiting the ride when it started up again. Another witness said he heard a crashing sound, then saw the ride operator fall to his knees crying. Ambulances were immediately on the scene: two of the five reportedly have serious injuries. The ride will be inspected by the state Deparment of Labor, and the local sheriff's office will conduct an investigation.
