More than 50,000 Americans visited Cuba between Jan. 1 and May 9 of this year—a 36 percent rise from the same period last year, according to a University of Havana professor. While the majority came directly from the U.S., as in previous years, the number of Americans traveling through third countries has increased by more than 50 percent. Despite a loosening in U.S.-Cuban tensions, travel to Cuba is still only permitted for certain categories. However, American travelers now only have to self-certify that their trip falls under one of the allowed groups.
