Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker told reporters in a Monday press conference that he believes Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election is “close to being completed.” “I’ve been fully briefed on the investigation,” Whitaker said. “Right now the investigation is, I think, close to being completed and I hope we can get the report from Director Mueller as soon as possible.” Whitaker also noted that his previous remarks criticizing Mueller’s probe were made as a “private citizen, only with publicly available information” and said he felt “comfortable” that the “decisions that were made” would be “reviewed.” According to Politico, Whitaker chose not to recuse himself from Mueller’s probe despite being advised by a Justice Department ethics official to step aside.
