Afghan authorities killed the last insurgents who were holed up in the U.S. embassy in Kabul Wednesday, ending a 19-hour standoff. At least nine people were killed and 23 wounded in a blitz of Taliban attack in Afghanistan's capital. Insurgents launched an assault on the U.S. embassy early Tuesday, firing rifles and rocket-propelled grenades into the building as well as into NATO headquarters. The timing of the attack—just two days after the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and amid a recent rash of violence in the capital—raises new questions about the U.S. plan to hand over security to Afghan forces by 2014.
